  • The Power of God Displayed

God is strong – really strong. God is the almighty
God. There is no one or no thing as strong as Him.
He is omnipotent, and by that we mean all powerful. God has the power to do anything.

We rightly sing the old hymn “Praise to the Lord, the
almighty…” God deserves the praise we give Him
for His strength, might, and power. There are many
ways to talk about the power of God and ways we
    witness it throughout Scripture.

We see God’s power in creation. Genesis 1 tells us
that God created the world. It took a lot of power
to create this world. We see God’s power in
miracles. Exodus tells us that God held back the
winds and waves and divided the Red Sea so that
people could cross through. It’s not easy to part a
sea. It takes a lot of power to do that. John 11 tells
us that Jesus’s powerful words raised Lazarus
from the dead. It is not easy to raise the dead. It
takes a lot of power. God’s power is seen in the
    miracles He does.
We see God’s power in Jesus’s sovereign Lordship.
Hebrews 1 tells us that “he upholds the universe by
the word of his power.” That’s a lot of power. Our
lives, and this world, and this universe are being
held together by the sovereign reign of the Lord
Jesus. God’s power is seen in this! There are lots of
ways for us to reflect on the power of God.

There is another way of considering the power of
God. And this angle deserves much priority and
attention. Our Sunday morning study through the
book of Romans introduces us to another display
of the power of God. Romans 1:16 states “For I am
not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of
God for salvation.” Here the Word of God points us
to another way that we see the power of God.
The power of God is seen in salvation. In other
words, when someone gets saved the power of
God is at work. Salvation is of the Lord. And so, no
one can be saved apart from God’s power.
When someone turns to Jesus from the heart and
confesses Him to be the risen Lord Jesus, the
power of God makes that happen.
When someone repents of their sin by turning to
Jesus in brokenness and honest confession of
their wrong doing, the power of God makes that
    happen.
When someone changes from the inside-out and
their life begins to bear fruit that God is now
dwelling in them, the power of God makes that
    happen.
When someone believes God and trusts fully in
the truth of God over and against the lies of this
world, the power of God makes that happen.
The power of God is an awesome subject for us to
focus on, and let’s make sure one of the ways we
most fully understand the power of God is by
what He is doing in our own personal salvation!
